Comments: | My grand father Arlie Allen Lacy was in the combat engineers in WW II. I think it was the 143th but not real sure. I know General Bradley was his comander. He was from Alabama. I know he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge to some extent. I remember him telling storys of how cold he was and how much he missed my grandma. I also remember how much he hated the French, probably as much as the Germans. All I do know is that I am proud for what he done for our country and I am proud of what all veterans did for our Country. I would just love to know more about his campaigns and life in the army. Where do I go for help? |

How did you hear about us?:
Comments: | My father, Eddie Broderick was in the 150th from D-Day until end of war. He was a middle weight boxer representing the battalion and fought in US prior to deployment and again in the UK. Stories I remember from childhood dealt with demolitions, mine sweeping and bridge building. He had many B&W photos - they were very tiny compared to what I grew up with. He drove a modified 2.5 ton truck with twin fifties mounted behind the cab. Most 2 1/2 trucks that were equiped with offensive firepower had a 30 cal so his truck must have left an impression to anyone seeing it and I wonder if anyone remembers seeing it. I had photos of it but can't find them: they may have been lost in a house fire. I'm looking for anyone who remembers Eddie Broderick. He was a fun guy and I understand had a fiery reputation associated with his boxing exploits. My father continued to serve. He died of a heart attack 1967. He was a detective- Stamford, CT Police Force. He often spoke of his buddies who never made it home. I have some momentoes and perhaps his 150th campaign scrapbook. I can scan it if anyone is looking that type of stuff. |

Comments: | We will be visiting site more often for info on dates and location of Bn.. Our father was not transferred into Bn. until sometime around February 23, 1945. He originaly was a replacement Infantry who landed on Utah beach D-Day, was then put into the 90th Division on June 14th. He received a Combat Infantry Badge that same day, and fought with his Regiment until the 19th, when fighting the German breakthrough from the Cherburg Peninsula was wounded. After months in hospitals he was in limited service as a typist when his brother, James Inman also in the same Co., was able to transfer him into the 150th. James Inman, our uncle, joined the 150th in England just before they crossed the channel. Both brothers were together until the 150th was transferred from the 3rd Army. At this time Paul went to the 673 Engr. ToPo. Co. which built the "Battle Route of the XII Corps" map. Thank you for a great site. God bless all the men and women who fight for Democracy then and now. |

I am researching the American Army units that were based in the Henley, Nettlebed, Kingwood Common, Peppard, Badgemore and Checkendon areas in 1943 to 1945. I have a particular interest in the Station Hospitals at Kingwood Common and Checkendon. I am looking for any one with memories, photos, plans they would be prepared to share with me or any ideas for places to look. There is a small concrete 'Engineer Castle' still in the woods near Nettlebed. It was made by the 343rd Eng Batt and I am told it was one of two at the entrances to the camp. Hence your page on the Castle device as used by the Engineers was very interesting! Best wishes from Oxfordshire Tony |

Comments: | My father is Gildas Angers and he served in the 150th Combat Engineers Company "B". My husband and I went to France in May of this year and went to the beach where they landed and also Angers France. It was very moving to go the areas they went to during the war. I hope to see more next year on our trip to Belgium. |

I truley wish I had paid attention and asked more questions of his duties and where abouts....I can't ask him now. I only know I want everyone out there to know how important it is to remember and recognize there brave men and women for their dedicated lives they have given. Some returned and some did not. No matter what branch you are or were in I thank you for answering your call. God Bless and Keep you with him. |

Comments: | Thank you Soldier Have you stopped to thank a veteran today? For the price of freedom they had to pay? Did you gaze into those distant eyes? Did you see the ghosts he can't deny? Did you think a soldier's heart was made of steel? Because he was trained to kill, he couldn't feel? Did you see the guilt written on his face, For the loss of life he can't replace? Did you know he mourns the lives he couldn't save, And walks with comrades in their grave? Did you remember the boy with innocence lost? Do you really know war's ultimate cost? Have you felt the blast of artillery fire? Do you have the courage it would require? Have you stood in trenches consumed with fear? Felt the enemies breath so very near? Have you walked with God on a battleground? Seen your brothers dead or dying all around? Have you stopped to thank a vet today, Or did you just turn and walk away? From the pain he'll carry for the rest of his life, Did you consider his family, his children, his wife? That watch him suffer in silence each and every day, As he's haunted by memories that don't go away? Did you care that the soldier is still pulling guard? That his heart, mind, and soul will forever be scarred? Do you know how he suffers from ptsd? Or that our precious freedom is never free? Do you care that he still hears the blood curdling screams? Or that he returns to the war each night in his dreams? Have you felt the sorrow of a combat vet? Or would you rather just forget? That war has pierced his hardened heart, And torn this soldier all apart? Would you rather our heroes just fade away? Or will you stop to thank a vet today? By Chris Woolnough |

Comments: | My father served on the USS Arthur Middleton during World War II, 1942 to 1945. He was in the US Coast Guard. He was one of the head cooks who provided the last meals for the US Marines before they hit the beaches. He told many stories of the young brave soldiers who they transported from island to island. He was not a Marine, just a service man serving his country during a time of war. He got home safe but passed away a few years ago at 80. Anyone remember old "cookie', he was Tony Pallija, sr. Comments: | : Hi: My father was a member of the 540th Combat Engineers WWII. I have created a website that is dedicated to him and his fellow VI Corps Engineers (the 36th, 39th and 540th). Dad and his fellow engineers were generally part of VI Corps and attached to the 5th and 7th Armies too. Saw action from North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, Central Europe including the Ardennes/Alsace and Germany. I am looking of course for members of the above, but also collecting ANY stories/history from combat engineers who served in WWII. If you have a story you would like to contribute, please contact me. I would love to add your page to our site. We also have a guestbook and a forum. So please stop by and post your info. I have an extensive listing of links including engineer sites and many links for research. I have helped several people find info on their units or have been able to put them in contact with old members. Sincerely, Marion Chard Proud daughter of Walter (Monday) Poniedzialek 540th Combat Engineer WWII |

Comments: | Excellent website. Perhaps you'd enjoy reading ours. Please check out {gone} -- the author's official web page, which features information about his biographical novel HITLER HERE. This work is unique because all the characters have bylines and thus the opportunity to reveal what they did and how they felt during an era of unprecedented destruction. The online excerpts are from the points-of-view of Hitler and six other characters. At the recent Frankfurt Book Fair, HITLER HERE generated reading copy requests from several foreign publishers, and the English language rights in India have just been sold to Mastermind Books. How did you hear about us? | Google search for the Sarre River |
Comments: | My uncle, Vincent L. Costello, of the Mattapan section of Boston, Massachusetts, was a member of the 150th Combat Engineers, Company B, First Squad. He won the Bronze Star for volunteering to place a bridge section across the Sarre River, Dec. 8, 1944, as is reported on his citation. I am confused by the Dec. 10, 1944 date on your site. He is not listed on your Bronze Star recipient list. He actually got the Bronze Star via GO 95 HQ XII Corps 23July1945. After reading the citation I cannot imagine what it takes to get the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Uncle Vinnie never talked about any of his military experiences. Also, when he returned home in 1949, after a second tour of duty, he could not deal with certain holidays, i.e., VE Day, Fourth of July, Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) but especially Memorial Day. Today we have help for those with what we have come to know as Post Traumatic Stress. Uncle Vinnie never complained. It seems he could do anything. He worked as a crane operator for several years adn then became a U.S. Postal operations employee. Vinnie was shy, quiet and a spiritual man. He was a person of ultimate integrity. He died July 10, 1973 of cardiac failure, at my mother's home, a result of having both of his heart valves replaced in experimental cardio-vascular surgery many years earlier. I have started doing a family geneaology and came across Uncle Vin's Bronze Star and his citation. Thus, the search about the Sarre River was on. Google Search brought me to the Sarre River item that brought me directly to your web site. And, what a fantastic site it is. I also have a note that he wrote home to my aunt, his sister, in which he writes a rather uplifting memo in October 30, 1944. He even asked about me. Imagine being upbeat during the conditions that the 150th was enduring in that time period. I found him in the Battalion Photo. He is the last man on the right side of the last row. He carried a picture of my mother with him throughout the war. While guarding some German POWs, of considerable importance, a German officer thanked my uncle by painting a picture of my mother. The German officer used his own silk shirt as a canvas. The artist got everything correct, except my mother's eye color, blue, that he painted brown. Rather good from a black and white very small photo. My uncle brought the painting home with him. It is quite remarkable. The shirt's button holes are still present. Upon his return home in 1949, he had a friend with him, a guy named Rocky Marciano, from Brockton, Massachusetts-yes, the very same Rocky Marciano that became the Heavy Weight Boxing Champion. Rocky complained that Uncle Vin knocked him around too much. They were pals. They got very drunk that night celebrating being home on American soil. If anyone in the 150th, from Feb. 1943 - Nov. 1945, knew of him, I would like to hear from you. Thanks for a terrific web site. Ron Costello |

Comments: | I enjoyed your website very much, and have visited it often. My grandfather (Lt. Col. Adrian Horace Williams) was involved with the Rhine River Crossing. I have many of his medals and certificates, as well as a portfolio titled, "The Rhine Crossing - 12th Army Group Engineer Operations" by Brigadier General P.H. Timothy. This portfolio is stamped RESTRICTED in red (however by now of course it is most likely declassified). He was with the 258th Engineering Combat Battalion. He trained with Navy LCM's and LCVP's on Prince Albert Canal. One of my grandfather's handwritten comments in the page margins told of the freezing weather posing anticipated problems to the naval craft (since Navy equipment was designed for use in salt water), the 258th Engineers initiated help to the Ninth Army by wrapping chemical heating pads around the motors. He also wrote that the Baily-bridge equipment under camouflage nets at Sevelen, Germany were "Poor camouflage!" |

Comments: | Hi Rick, This is Benoit, do you remember me ? I sent you a couple of pictures from the Sarre River 5 years ago. Well, today is D-Day ! I just wanted to say on your website how important this celebration has been in France, especially today, 60 years after the OverLord operation. All peoples from Europe are so grateful to all these soldiers who fought and died for our freedom. Many celebrations have taken place in Normandy for a few days, especially in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Arromanche and in Colleville Cemetery, near Omaha Beach. I just heard our president Chirac saying today : "France will never forget what America did for us" ; and I will always remember that your father was directly involved in my father's liberation on December 8th, 1944 in Sarreinsming! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Benoit. |

This year, (2004) I will be attending the reunion with him. I believe that this is the last year that it is being held, so I am glad to be able to attend. The site looks great, hope you keep it up! |

How did you hear about us?
Comments: | He was in the 99th Infantry Division and was in the first draft in May 1941. He was just a farm boy. He earned a 'battlefield commission' and of course was wounded. Came back, raised a great family and happily married for over 60s years. |
A Tribute to George. Battle of the Bulge Veteran George L. Dresdow, Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin passed away Feb 5, 2004 "Live on your Memories" were my brother's words of consolement to me after our Father passed away in 1986 at the age of 96. How fortunate we are to have that many wonderful years. My brother George, 6 1/2 years older than me, relished teasing his kid sister. He would say that I had a big mouth and would go get the yardstick to measure my mouth! I would say 'well' and he would say, "How many wells make a river...52 and a fool like you". We would argue over getting the crust of Mother's homemade bread, or having the silver knife that rattled to spread the butter on the bread. "It is your turn to haul in the wood" or "It is your turn to do the dishes". I would chase him with the broom and he would throw water on me. We had lots of bats flying around at night and he would tell me to watch out for they would get in my hair. Mother said, we could not get along with each other nor could we get along without each other. One of the things I remember best was I called him a SOB and he told Mother. I had no idea what I had called him but learned well from that. Dad used to plant cucumbers by the half acre and King, our German Shepherd dog would nip George on the butt while he was bending down to pick the cucumbers, George would rise up and shake his fist at King and when George bent down again King would run by and do more nipping, What a fun thing to remember. We taught King to play 'hide and seek' and George hid and layed flat on the milk house roof. King went around and around sniffing the ground and finally looked and saw George. I shall never forget the happy dog and George's kindness to animals. There are so many more memories to share, such as he grew older, we had to stop calling him 'Sonny' and call him George. Our sister Myrtle called him Sonny at a teenage social event and he refused to answer her! How we worried about him when he was called into the army before World War II began. We were all so happy when he married Marion. He had never really been interested in girls and I never knew him to even date before Marion. What a wonderful wife she has been to him and they raised the most beautiful family together. They all gave our Mother and Father such happiness. Mother sat up in bed the exact time George was wounded in the "Battle of the Bulge" and told Dad that George had been wounded. George said he knew at that time that Mother knew! George did receive a Battle Field Commission for his bravery He was a real soldier on earth! On one of my last visits with George in his home, he told me that if he came back from the War that he made a promise that he would be a "soldier for Christ" This is a tribute from Georges sister Ethel Dresdow Christensen Anchorage Alaska |

Comments: | wow!! well, I'm searching a lot further back than any can imagine!! I do come from a relatively 'army' background.......both my uncles on my dads side were sent to Saskatchewan, Canada, and Newfoundland(not incorporated into Canada till after the 2d ww),and my dad was with the 48th Highlanders, and went to Europe....I know nothing about his battalion??? Now for ancient history!! Can anyone tell me about the Royal Engineer's, out of England? During the early 1800's, there was 25 sent to BC Canada, to look after the uprising in 1858, and I do believe one of my grandfathers 'could' have been one of the 25.How do I get info on them? I know they helped build dykes, around Steveston, as it was low lying ground, and there is a cemetery now in New Westminster, called 'Sapperton", which they were called that because of the type of spade/shovel they used.thanks in advance and god bless all who served and protected our people and country!! Comments: | Great website! I am grateful to find anyone willing to honor the men who fought for our freedom. I have always wanted to know what my Dad did during the war and maybe speak to some of the men he served with. I have some great photos. Hopefully, some of the guys will see this and contact me. I am trying to get more specific information about his outfit from his service records and will update my posting when it comes in. Thanks and keep up the good work. Russell Wilhelm |

Comments: | Hi: My dad James Washington (a white man from Miami, Fla) was in the 36th Combat Engineers during WWII. They went into 6 invasions and he got a special medal for that. His company went to: Caserta, So. Africa, Cassino, Anzio, Sicily, and Rome. He also got two purple hearts (one of which was from being hit at Anzio Beach Head shrapnel from a bomb the other was for frozen feet/gunshot wound). Terrie Washington |

Comments: | My father served in Company H 1256th Engineer Combat Battalion. He passed away in 1968, and I was 11 years old. We are from New Jersey, so of course his basic training and place of separation was Fort Dix, NJ. I have his discharge papers and it states under battles and campaigns: Rhineland; Rome-Arno; Southern France; Go 33 wd 45 as amended. He also received: a Erocam Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal; Purple Heart; and a World War 11 Victory Medal. Can anyone offer any more information, as I am looking to trace his steps. I am also looking for any photographs that might have my father in them. God Bless America! |

Comments: | My dad was in the 296th combat engineers in WW II. My daughter, an education student at UCF is taking a class in history, and will be doing a semester project on combat engineers of WW II. My dad's outfit created a hardcover book with dozens of great pictures similar to yours. I am also a collector of old military weapons, and have battle rifles from every army of the war, including an M1 Garand. Keep up the good work with this site. |

Comments: | Included with my father's WWII memorabilia are photos of Aachen, Germany. The notations on the photos indicate they are from T/5 Charles Ayers, 977th Engineers, 9th Army. They are dated February 1945. My father's unit, 658th FA Bn, arrived at Aachen in April 1945. I am curious as to how dad acquired these photos. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could shed some light on this matter. |
